The BIOSERF project « Sustainability of tropical forest biodiversity and services under climate and human pressure » (2011-2015) is funded by Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO). It is coordinated by the Behavioural Biology Unit (Etho) of the University of Liège. The objective is to assess the sustainability of ecosystem services in the forest areas of the northwestern part of DR Congo, by combining field data and mathematical models. The contribution of UMCCB to the project focuses on the modelling of forest ecosystems in this area with the CARAIB dynamic vegetation model. In particular, the model is used to study the distributions of several tree species of the equatorial African forest and their response to future climate changes. New model developments also aim at representing seed dispersal by local fauna, in order to evaluate the regeneration capacity of these tree species in an area where human pressure will strongly increase in the future.
